The first version of this post was far more inflammatory, I was on a mission to piss off everyone I could but then I tamed it down. I am sure I will put a few people’s noses out of joint but hey, that is why I am called the fecal agitator. I do believe every word I have written here however, it isn’t just an effort to stir the pot.
Young adults have been buggered up by a far bigger issue then the grade school classroom. For decades, there has been a concerted effort by politicians, business, parents and yes even education to sideline kids. Now whether it is by fluke or by design is irrelevant, it has been done. The question is, will it continue?
In my opinion, there is no earthly reason why bright capable young people need to be warehoused. They should be part of the adult world, learning while the work, like they did in the bad old days. Sure education is still important but we need to begin employing the co-op and apprenticeship models of education far more liberally then we do now and give kids their adulthood back.
Fortunately, there is hope on the horizon for our young people. As boomers retire, it is thought there will be a major labour shortage and we will be forced to engage our young people by employing them in a meaningful way once again. Perhaps this won’t come to fruition for the kids I am working with now but soon, I really hope soon.
